The annual “gathering of the tribe” took place on October 25, 2013, and ushered in a flood of community support for this amazing event.
The competitors gathered at the beach to welcome each other, catch up on old times, and spend an amazing day with their families as they celebrate the opening of yet another big wave season. This year’s gathering was brightened by the kids from the Half Moon Bay High School and middle school surf teams, who joined the competitors and others for the paddle out.
Contest Director Jeff Clark welcomed the crowd and introduced the surfers. He was joined by special guests from Oracle Team USA skipper Jimmy Spithill and grinder Shannon Falcone, who offered their words of encouragement. Surf icons Darryl Virostko, Gary Linden, Bob Pearson and so many others joined the paddle out as well.
The surfers were given Ti Leaves as a sign of protection and safety in the water, and then paddled out for the traditional prayer circle. Fans, media and families watched with fascination from the beach.
The Athlete’s Dinner was a chance for the crew to catch up on life, and of course draw numbers for the heat selections for Round 1 of the contest. The names are set, now we wait for the waves.
